Q. Lance,
What ever happened to the Micro Midgets that raced at Westmead in the 60’s? People like Clive Pollock where around then, but I had to go to National
Service and everything was different afterwards.
Are any videos available of the Sydney Showground Midgets feature races – 50 and 100 lappers. I remember that at different stages Channel 7 used to televise them with
the Raymond Brothers. I used to be a fan of Jeff Freeman. He died on Mothers Day when I stayed home for my mother.
Henry
A. Hi Henry, Thanks for the question
After Westmead closed the micro midgets moved onto the new Liverpool Raceway. It was not long after they changed the name of the club and the cars to Grand
Prix Midgets. The likes of Wally Kermond, Stan Bayliss and Clive Pollock raced at Liverpool. (Wally Kermond gave away the Micros and began racing Super Modifieds)
When Liverpool was turned into an asphalt surface most of guys you used to watch at Westmead retired. The cars became different, more powerful moters, high wings
on the back, wide wheels and higher speeds on the Liverpool high banks saw a new breed of younger driver emerge. Dennis Johnson, was a stand our driver.
As for videos of the 100 lappers at the Sydney Royale Showground. I beleive that W D & H O Wills (the cigarette manufactuer) may have, the only other person
I know who may have is Mike Raymond.
Interestingly, I still see Mike & Steve each Saturday evening as they and I work at Parramatta City Raceway. I was also at Westmead the day in Which Jeff Freeman was
killed, he was a stand out driver for the era.
I hope this has been of some help to you. For any further information please do not hesitate to contact me again.
Sincere Regards
Lance Wilson
Q. Hello Lance,
Had a chuckle when I read your article on your EH. I too jacked out the rear guards on my first car (EH Holder 1964 model) 35 years ago. Three months ago I pulled
my EH out of the corner of the shed where it has been sitting motorless for many years. I have decided to resurrect the 'old girl' after finding and rebuilding an
original 179 engine. The shell is currently at the panel beater/ spray painters and I have decided the colour will be Saltbush Green the same as yours.
I'm trying to keep the project as near to original as possible . 179 motor, 3 on the tree, bench seats, 13" wheels.
Can I ask for your help with where to purchase the paint and any tips for the upholstery?
I am located in Mingenew a small country town in the mid west of Western Australia , 400 kms north of Perth. It tends to be a setback when it comes to locating the
people and accessing information on parts and services to help me complete my project. I am lucky enough to have found a spray painter who has just relocated to
Carnamah, 75km from here and who was referref to me by a member of the Geraldton Vintage Car Club.
Hope to hear from you.
Regards
A. Hi Rick I am working on it for you!
