Lance a bash veteran decided to build his own car similar to a Variety Bash car because he was invited to partake in the 2010 Camp Quality EsCarpade.
Camp Quality are an organisation that raises funds for children who are suffering from cancer or cancer related illnesses. The Entry fee is $5000
The car is a 1974 HQ Holden Premier with a 253 V8 engine coupled to a 5 speed Toyota Supra gear box.
The EsCarpade departed Tamworth after heavy rain eased after a deluge the days leading up to the event. After a hearty breakfast was supplied by the local lions
club. Route instructions were issued and the cars were on the way to Armidale. Not long after the start snow hit like you would you believe. Snow! Then more heavy
rain. Great for the dirt tracks that they were about to encounter. Lance, after partaking on 17 Variety Bashes was looking forward to the slipping and slidin.
The navigator has one of the most difficult job in conditions such as they were encountering a far cry from hurtling around Mt Panorama at 208 kph. After the first
day on the mud, crossing creeks which turned into rivers, the HQ was still purring with not a drop of oil being used and all dirty covered in mud and slosh.
During the event they visited country towns like Tamworth, Inverell, Warwick, Mooloolaba, Hervey Bay, Dalby, Goodiwindi with a large parade finish in Warialda.
A trip of approx 3500 kilometres with 90% of that on dirt or and in many cases mud.
This was the 19th annual EsCarpade with 66 vehicles aged 30 years or older. With over 200 people on the event it was as Camp Quality described it,
"An extraordinary event full of fun" This relates to their motto "Laughter is the best medicine"
The HQ survived the event with only one major problem "threwing a power steering belt" while travelling through a long, wide, deep mud section.
The car returned to Sydney and is garaged until the next 2011 EsCarpade which is normally held around October.
